How Not to be Led By Your Feelings –

This study is to be done at your own pace, or rather, in God’s timing!

I will cover a small section of each chapter each week and as you as led, please share comments so we can all grow together in this journey.

Chapter 1 / Section 1

Jeremiah 33:3 Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.

Usually each section is separated by a Scripture verse, except the beginning of chapter 1  so this one came to my mind this morning and I believe it’s appropriate!

The answer we seek is always found in God and what we really seek is more of the Holy Spirit, because that is how Jesus lives in us and through us.

I believe, with all my heart, that the Holy Spirit will cause us each to learn how not to be led by our feelings, which begins with Him opening up our eyes to see things about ourselves we didn’t know before.

Like an iceberg – The Holy Spirit will chip away at all the rough edges, and lies we’ve been believing, and walls we’ve set up over the years and although it will hurt at first, what He is doing is sculpting us to be like Him, to fulfill the calling He has on each of our lives, no matter what that calling is.

God’s plan for us is to walk in the Spirit, which we must renew daily, and ask for the Holy Spirit and more of the Holy Spirit every day.

The devil’s plan is for us to be separated from God and not to fulfill the calling on our life.

I’ll use quotes to quote Joyce and what she says in the section we’re referring to.

“If we lack understanding about the fickle nature of emotions, Satan can use them – or the lack of them – to keep us out of God’s will.  I firmly believe that no person will ever walk in God’s will and ultimately in victory if he takes counsel with his emotions.”

Heavenly Father,  we are asking for the Holy Spirit to guide us throughout our study of Your Word and of this book.  We ask for You to open our eyes to the truths about ourselves and open our ears to hear what You are saying to us in Jesus’ name we pray…amen

Personal Testimony –

While getting ready for breakfast I was trying to decide what book to read and I kept thinking Pilgrim’s Progress so I turned to it and only read 2 pages and this was on the 2nd page I read.  It is Pilgrim being asked about victory over carnality.

When you experienced such precious times in overcoming carnal annoyances, can you remember how you obtained these victories?

Pilgrim’s response:

Yes, there are several means.  For instance, when I think and meditate on what I saw at the cross, that will do it.  And when I look at my embroidered coat, that will do it.  Plus, when I read and study the scroll I carry in my pocket next to my heart, that will do it.  When my thoughts are warmly stimulated about where I am going, that will do it too.

My thoughts…

The answer is always turning our focus away from whatever the temptation is and bringing our thoughts back into captivity by Christ Jesus.

Think about what Jesus did for us, think about that we are Christians and His ambassadors, speaking the Word or God and praying also, remembering how you’ve overcome in the past, thinking of Heaven.  Change the focus…off of self or whatever the thoughts are towards Jesus.

Instead of thinking what we want to do, saying, God I want to please You, not me, so help me to walk by faith instead of by my feelings.

  1. I love the definition of emotion she introduces this section with – to move away… or to move us out of the will of God. Her warning, “If we lack understanding about the fickle nature of emotions, Satan can use them…” That is some pretty sound advise.

I find that any emotion that is not ‘joy’ I should try to consider as a a red-flag that stops me and makes me question… ‘Now hold on. Where is this taking you? Towards God or Away from Him?’

(‘Joy’ of course, is the immediate reminder of His presence and I get to sit for a few minutes with him to say, “Thanks!”)

  2. I didn’t receive an email saying more was added to this and I checked here the day before this was posted. At least I think I did because I remember reading the first chapter and then checking and there was nothing here. I’ll have to check my notes before I can add my thoughts and I see there’s another one posted yesterday. Ok, I’ll catch up!

  3. Lots of gems in this writing, thank you. A lot of gems in Elisa’s comments, too. Thank you ladies. I love growing in faith…and love.
