Heavenly Father – We return to You today for more instruction. A little fearful as we read what the disciples were called to do in the last chapter. A little anxious over the effects that following You will have on our families. But Lord, You are Jehovah Shalom, the God of our peace. And the God of our strength and encouragement. Reveal to us Your will for us as we draw near to You. We ask this in the name our glorious savior, Jesus. Amen.
Matthew Chapters 9 – 10
Heavenly Father – We return to You today to hear Your Word. Speak to our hearts, reveal to us what we are clinging to in this world so we may ask for Your help in releasing it. Then, bring us new life as a replacement. We ask this in the name our glorious savior, Jesus. Amen.
Matthew Chapters 7 – 8
Heavenly Father – We return to You to read Your Word, Lord, for renewed life. For the unfolding of Your Words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple. (PS 119:130). Grant us Your wisdom as revealed in these words that we study today. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Matthew Chapters 5 – 6
Heavenly Father – We come to sit at the feet of Jesus as Matthew records His Sermon on the Mount. Wash our hearts clean with Your sovereign grace so that we may hear these words in a new way. What mental blocks we have, reveal them, so that with Your help, they can be removed. Guide us closer to You, Father. We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
Matthew Chapters 3 – 4
Heavenly Father – We return to You to continue reading Matthew’s Gospel of Jesus the Messiah. We are told this is Your mystery, hidden for generations before, now being revealed to all of mankind. Our spirits call to Your Spirit. Stay with us. Help us understand this mystery; we don’t want to miss this! We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
Matthew Chapters 1 – 2
Heavenly Father – We come to You to read Your Word. The first Gospel in the New Testament, recorded by Matthew – a tax collector, shunned by his fellow Jewish countrymen, but not by You. Let your Spirit guide us and shape us as we read these chapters. Show us more about Your character. Encourage us and strengthen our faith. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
Come Holy Spirit
I have often heard this phrase used… Come Holy Spirit… as if it would turbocharge your ‘spiritual’ powers. As if you called yourself a Christian, then you could invoke this prayer, for when you really needed God. Like perhaps the majority of the time you’re good on your own.
I don’t think that’s how it works. But bear with me, while I try to work this out.
Acts Chapters 27-28
Dear Heavenly Father – As we finish reading the book of Acts, we thank You for Luke’s recording of how the early Church began. We see Your hand in spreading of the Gospel message of salvation. We praise You for two thousand years of communicating through the Spirit so that today, we can still hear Your voice. Let us respond in a way that honors, pleases, and glorifies You. We pray this in the name of our Savior, Jesus. Amen.
Acts Chapters 25-26
Dear Heavenly Father – We return to Your Word as we follow Paul into the next stage of his witnessing among hostile audiences and difficult circumstances. We ask for Your wisdom and guidance, in the mighty name of our Lord, Jesus. Amen.
Acts Chapters 23-24
Dear Heavenly Father – We return to Your Word today to read how Paul is inspected for speaking Your truth. Let us receive the message that You want to teach us. We ask for Your wisdom and guidance, in the mighty name of our Lord, Jesus. Amen.
